A Pat on the Back

In a recent onsite training at a new client we ran the Group Idle Report for our client’s vehicle. The results came in the standard range that we see from 10%-30% engine time. Historically we have found idle time percentage below 10% is good with anything below 5% excellent. We have seen idle times average as high 75%. The unnecessary costs to the company are tremendous! Idle time eats up gas, wears out engines prematurely, and really does a number on the environment.

The report we ran for the training group included our client’s delivery trucks that make multiple stops a day of which many are in municipality that has ordinance prohibiting commercial truck idling between the hours of 8-5. There in the middle of the report was an idle “miracle”! Truck #66 had an average idle time of 0.1%(one tenth of one percent). We quickly ran the report again thinking that there must be some mistake! Yet there it was again- 0.1%. We asked if the driver did the same job as the other drivers, ran the same type of vehicle, had the same type of training etc. The answer was yes to everything. We all quickly agreed it is actually possible to not idle during the day.

Our client is going back to other drivers to set them on the same path as the driver of Truck #66 and to give him a pat on the back!
